Hit-and-Run Motorist Causes 13-Year-Old Boy to Break Both Legs

A 13-year-old boy from Staten Island was hit by a motorist who left the scene on foot. The accident occurred on Thursday, March 30th, just after 6:00 p.m, in West Brighton, Staten Island. While Qwaddel Lovelace was crossing the street with his younger brother, a black Chrysler Concorde hit him at the intersection of Henderson Avenue and Broadway.

According to police, the motorist, Tyreek Wilson, age 24, had just left an attempted car stop when he struck the boy and then a utility pole. Police were trying to pull him over for a missing license plate. They saw the ex-con driving on Castleton Avenue without a front license plate. They then made a U-turn and pursued Mr. Wilson, who quickly drove away from them. When they turned on their flashing lights, Mr. Wilson, who was stopped at a red light, veered into the approaching lane of traffic and continued through the intersection, where he struck the boy.

The driver bolted from the Chrysler and left on foot in the eastern direction on Henderson Avenue. There was surveillance of a man running from the site of the accident. Police used bloodhounds to conduct a search of the neighborhood.
Lovelace was transported to Richmond University Medical Center, where he is in critical, though stable, condition. He sustained two broken legs. However, it is anticipated that he will fully recover from his injuries. His brother was uninjured.
Police are looking for a black man in his 20s, with a height of 5 feet 10 inches, and who was dressed in a blue shirt, blue jeans and a doo rag. His car had considerable damage to its front bumper. A Collision Investigation Squad was taken to the scene, and police are conducting an investigation into the accident.

In a strange development, it was the boy’s family who helped identify Mr. Wilson. Lovelace’s family has known Mr. Wilson and his family for some years. Mr. Wilson has 10 prior arrests, and is on probation for robbery until 2022.
