A car crash occurred in Brentwood, Long Island, where an everyday ride in a car to drop off a babysitter had a tragic ending. The accident occurred on Thursday, July 28 at about 10:00 a.m., when a woman was reversing her car out of a driveway while in the process of driving her children’s babysitter to her nearby home.
However, an unlicensed motorist allegedly crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle, causing the death of the babysitter, Maria Alfaro, of Bay Shore. Alfaro was taken to Northwell Health Southside Hospital before she succumbed to her injuries. She was 52 years old when she died.
At the time of the accident, the sidewalk was under construction. Neighbors stated that they consider the road on which the accident occurred, Crooked Hill Road, to be a highway and that there have always been accidents on that road. For many years, people have lost their lives in car accidents on that road – and yet very little has been done to prevent such fatalities.
A traffic light was recently installed at the next intersection. However, neighbors said it was placed in the wrong area and is not functioning. Thus, no one driving on the roadway bothers to reduce their speed.
The victim’s daughter, Mariela Lozano, said she does not blame either motorist involved in the fatal motor vehicle accident and does not wish to press charges against the driver who struck the car in which her mother was a passenger. Neighbors said attention must be given to the issue of speeding on the road. For the time being, local residents are trying to persuade motorists traveling on Crooked Hill Road to reduce their speed.
Suffolk County police identified the driver of the other car as 33-year-old Wilson Nieves of Brentwood. Nieves faces the charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle. He was also transported to Northwell Health Southside Hospital, where he received medical treatment and is said to be recuperating from non-life-threatening injuries.
Nieves is fortunate in that Lozano, the victim’s daughter, does not expect to press charges. However, Lozano may still elect to file a wrongful death claim against him because it was allegedly his negligent and reckless behavior that caused the death of her mother.
