A multi-vehicle crash occurred on the Cross Bronx Expressway on Monday, May 30, just after 12:00 p.m., and caused a tractor-trailer to hang dangerously over the Sheridan Parkway. The motorist in the tractor-trailer, identified as 55-year-old Pablo Lopez, was later taken to St. Barnabas Hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries. Although doctors needed to place seven metal staples in his head, medical officials described him as very fortunate to have survived the car accident in the first place.
FDNY Chief Vincent Mosca said it helped that the tractor-trailer did not contain any cargo, and thus, was not as hefty as it could have been. That might have prevented it from flipping onto the highway.
After being treated at the hospital, Lopez spoke with investigators and said he was driving on the roadway and returning to New Jersey from Connecticut, where he had dropped off a load of tomatoes.
At some point during his drive, a black car allegedly darted in front of Lopez and hit the front of his vehicle. The car’s front wheel reportedly became entangled with Lopez’s vehicle, prompting Lopez to attempt to stop near the bridge. However, by the time Lopez brought his truck to a halt, it was hanging off the bridge.
New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, members of the FDNY, and road workers worked together in the aftermath of the crash and spent hours trying to safeguard the tractor-trailer that had overturned. A tow truck was eventually able to pull the cab back up to an upright position, but there was still a great deal of rubble on the roadway.
As a result of the crash, all lanes on the highway had to be closed for five hours, resulting in a massive traffic jam.
NYPD officers are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash. At this time, no one has been cited for any traffic violations.
