A motorcycle accident recently claimed the life of a motorcyclist in Jacksonville, Florida. on the evening of Sunday, May 8. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at the intersection of I-95 and I-295 on the north side of Jacksonville.
Investigators stated that the motorcyclist, 28-year-old Joseph Powell, was travelling in the southern direction at approximately 7:00 p.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle and collided with the concrete barrier. Powell was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the road, where, according to state troopers, a tractor-trailer passed by and struck him. The tractor-trailer dragged the motorcycle to the entrance ramp for I-295 and came to rest in the grass shoulder by the tree line. The operator of that tractor-trailer reportedly left the scene after the accident.
Troopers think another tractor-trailer also may have struck Powell following his ejection from the motorcycle. The person driving that tractor-trailer stopped at the scene and is not being charged.
Powell was the fourth motorcyclist to lose his life in the northeastern part of Florida during a single weekend. Powell’s friends later started a GoFundMe.com account to raise funds to pay for his funeral. He has been described as “an amazing man” who went beyond the call as a friend and who never expected anything in return for his kindness.
