On the morning of Saturday, April 29th, a garbage truck rear-ended the car in which a three-year-old girl and three of her family members were riding in the Bronx. A Chevy Malibu was transporting the child and her family on Bruckner Boulevard when it reduced its speed to drive over a construction ramp. The garbage truck then rear-ended the car at approximately 10:00 a.m. The toddler was in a car seat at the time.
The sanitation truck, which is privately-owned, veered to avoid colliding with a parked car, and struck the Chevy from behind. As a result, the Chevy moved wildly into a metal pole. The child, Sophia Aguirre, was transported to Lincoln Hospital where she was declared dead. Her relatives were also taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. They are a woman, age 27, a man, age 52, and a woman, age 52.
The collision happened between East 144th Street and Southern Boulevard. The operator of the truck stayed on the scene, and according to police, no one is suspected of criminal behavior. The city’s Department of Transportation recently removed the surface of the top layer of a street. DOT crews had performed installation of a ramp with asphalt that wrapped around the manhole cover. It was not readily apparent if there was any signage on the street that informed drivers about the conditions on the road. However, the road is scheduled for repavement in the near future.
Following the crash, the DOT staff approached the scene to make certain that there were no problems concerning the street. They concluded that it was safe. However, the agency is still conducting an investigation into the accident.
