If you are the victim of a motor vehicle accident from someone else’s negligence that has resulted in serious and lasting injury, it is important to obtain proper evidence when trying to file a claim for financial compensation in New York City. This includes making sure that the authorities are called and proper documentation is made of the incident by the local police department where the incident occurred. Police reports can be considered very important pieces of evidence in a New York motor vehicle accident case.
What method you can use to get a police report depends largely on how long you decided to wait to obtain a copy of the police accident report for your records. Before the 30-day filing mark, you can file a request in person, online, or by mail. After the 30-day period has lapsed, you can request the report by mail or online from the DMV. Below, we list more details and links to proper website pages and documents you will need to complete this task.
Fastest Method (Usually 1-3 days, but up to two weeks is possible): You can request a copy of an NYPD police report at the police-regulated district or precinct where the accident occurred. This must be done during the first 30 days after the report’s filing date.
Online: Within 7 days after the precinct has your accident report available, it will be uploaded to their online portal. You can request your NYPD police accident report online using the Collision Report Retrieval Portal.
By mail: Download and complete two (2) copies of the Police Accident Report (Request for Copy of Collision Record), and mail the copies to the precinct where the accident occurred.
After 30 days from the date of the accident report: After 30 days from the date of the accident report, the precinct no longer will hold the accident report on file. After that time, all requests for the police report must be made to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Requesting an accident report from the DMV can be done one of two ways:
