NY Medical Malpractice Attorneys Represent Clients With Brain Injury Disorders Throughout New York City

Many people think of serious seizure disorders such as epilepsy as being hereditary, which is indeed often the case. However, epilepsy and other seizure disorders can also develop as a result of brain injuries, such as those caused by trauma and a lack of oxygen to the brain. Tragically, when such a brain injury occurs during the birthing process, a child may be a victim of periodic seizures for the rest of his or her life.

The medical malpractice and personal injury attorneys of Proner & Proner are intimately familiar with the laws regarding birth injuries and trauma. Our New York City lawyers have represented families throughout New York against negligent physicians, nurses, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.
If your child has developed epilepsy or any other seizure disorder as a result of medical malpractice, please contact the NYC attorneys of Proner & Proner to schedule an evaluation of your case.

About Epilepsy

The brain serves as the control center for the entire body. In order for a person to move, speak, feel, see, and think properly, the brain’s nerve cells must communicate with one another through a complex chain of electrical signals. In people who develop epilepsy due to brain injury, the nerve cells in the injured part of the brain discharge these signals incorrectly, causing the precise order of signals that is necessary to cellular communication to become disordered.

When this occurs, the person will experience a seizure. This seizure may be relatively mild, resulting in brief periods of “zoning out,” or it may be severe, resulting in loss of consciousness, spasms, and involuntary biting of the tongue and lips.

Common Obstetrical Errors That Can Result In Epilepsy

At birth, a child’s head is remarkably weak and vulnerable. Doctors, nurses, and other delivery room personnel must use extreme care to protect the head of the baby during the birthing process. When a child is deprived of oxygen at birth, the brain can be irreparably damaged. Likewise, brain damage can occur when instruments used to deliver a child, such as forceps, are used improperly or with undue force. Both deprivation of oxygen and head trauma are common causes of epilepsy and seizure disorders in young children.

Avoidable obstetrical errors are, tragically, among the most common and devastating forms of medical malpractice. At Proner & Proner in NYC, we believe that families should not have to shoulder the burdens placed on them by incompetent medical professionals alone. This is why we fight for the rights of these innocent victims and their families, working to ensure that they are properly compensated for the future financial hardships they would otherwise face.
