LIE Crash Kills Former Cuomo Aide and Four Others

A car crash involving three vehicles that occurred on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) caused the deaths of a 10-year-old boy who was headed to his own birthday party. The fatal collision also resulted in the deaths of the boy’s father and three others, including 29-year-old Scott Martella, a former aide to New York Governor Cuomo.

The fatal car accident occurred on the LIE near exit 68 in Manorville a little after 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 21. Carmelo Pinales was taking his son, 10-year-old Christopher Pinales, to the Splish Splash water park in Calverton, Long Island, for a celebration of Christopher’s birthday. At some point while driving on the LIE, the older Pinales lost control of his Subaru Outback. The vehicle reportedly crossed a grassy median went into the air, and then crashed into a Honda and a BMW, both of which were travelling in the opposite direction on the highway.

Pinales, who was 26 years old, and his sister, Patricia, age 27, were pronounced dead at the scene. Also pronounced dead at the scene was Martella, who was operating the Honda. A passenger in the BMW 81-year-old Isidore Adelson, later succumbed to his injuries at Southside Hospital in Bayshore, NY. Adelson’s wife, Helen, was lister in serious condition at the hospital. Analia, the three-year-old daughter of Patricia Pinales, also suffered significant physical injuries in the crash.

Martella was driving the Honda with his finacée, Shelbi Thurau, age 29. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the motor vehicle accident.

Police are currently conducting an investigation into the auto accident and are trying to determine whether Pinales was speeding prior to the time at which his Subaru crossed the median and crashed into the Honda and the BMW.

Speeding and Car Accidents

Motorists who drive at an excessive rate of speed cause many motor vehicle accidents in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and just about everywhere else in the United States. In fact, almost one-third of all motor vehicle accidents in the US are caused by speeding motorists. The faster you drive, the less reaction time you have and the greater the impact on the human body in the event of a collision. Consequently, personal injuries tend to be far more severe in automobile accidents in which a motorist was driving excessively fast.
