Deadly Kidney Damage Associated With Common Heartburn Drugs

Heartburn is something everyone has heard about but not always something everyone has had to deal with. It is unfortunately an unsettling experience that can turn a fantastic meal into an immediate regret.

The good news is that heartburn is something that can be treated by either altering your lifestyle or by using drugs like proton-pump inhibitors [PPIs] or histamine 2 [H2] blockers. These are designed to counteract the burning pain in the lower chest. This pain, known as heartburn, is created by acid reflux, which is when stomach contents are forced back up into the esophagus. At least 15 million Americans experience heartburn, according to estimates from the American College of Gastroenterology.

While these PPIs and H2 blockers sound like a great way to rid of heartburn, there are PPIs and H2 blockers that have been linked to deadly kidney damage. It has been found that PPIs carry a much greater threat to the kidney than H2 blockers even though both have been found to lead to kidney failure, kidney disease and other kidney problems.

Popular heartburn brand names that have been linked to deadly kidney damage are:

  • Protonix
  • Nexium
  • Prilosec
  • Prevacid
  • Dexilant
  • AcipHex
  • Zegerid
  • Pepcid [H2 blocker]
  • Zantac [H2 blocker]

125,596 patients were evaluated with their use of PPIs over the course of five years. It was discovered that they were found to be at a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease and acute injury than H2 blocker users.

In addition, a scary discovery during the evaluation was that more than half of patients who got chronic kidney damage did not experience acute kidney problems leading up to it. This means they were unaware of their declining kidney function until it was too late.

Some patients were found to have developed end-stage renal disease, which means the kidneys can no longer remove waste from the body sufficiently. This requires a kidney transplant or dialysis to keep patients alive.

It is never a good feeling to realize a drug you have been taking to help you has really been hurting you the whole time. If this is the case in your life, it is time to seek out a lawyer familiar with product liability litigation.
