Mesothelioma Diagnosis And What’s To Come

Mesothelioma
Cancer is a serious condition which can turn your world – or that of your loved ones – upside down from the moment of diagnosis. From expensive treatments to unfortunate and painful side effects, it is an experience no one should have to suffer through. Unfortunately, for some, it is something that cannot be avoided. One particular type of cancer that is most unsettling happens to be mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is often fatal and can leave you or a loved one with only months to live following a diagnosis.
The cancer is considered rare and aggressive, and it develops in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Mesothelioma has no known cure.
The Centers for Disease Control released a 2017 report that found between 2,400 and 2,800 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the U.S. each year. Those at the highest risk of developing the crippling cancer are people who have been exposed to or have worked with asbestos.
Unfortunately, this type of cancer has a long latency period, meaning that the time between becoming exposed to a carcinogen and the actual diagnosis can be anywhere between 20 and 50 years.
Mesothelioma can be categorized into the following four types:

  • Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis – this is an extremely rare form of this type of cancer. It can develop in men in the lining that covers the testicles.
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma – another very rare form of mesothelioma, this develops in the pericardium, also known as the lining of the heart.
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma – this is a common form of this type of cancer. It begins in the lining of the abdomen and the internal organs within.
  • Pleural Mesothelioma – the most common type of mesothelioma, accounting for 75% of all diagnoses. The cancer cells develop in the lining of the lungs and chest.

Asbestos is a leading cause of mesothelioma and many types of jobs expose workers to the naturally occurring mineral. Jobs like mining, construction, plumbing, shipbuilding and other similar industries carry a higher exposure risk to the cancer-causing material.
A mesothelioma diagnosis is never easy news to swallow — for yourself or for a loved one.
If diagnosed with Stage III, the median survival time is 12 months. For Stage II and I, it is 19 months and 21 months, respectively. The exception to the rule is the five to ten percent of patients who survive for at least five years following their diagnosis.
During this time, patients will have to go through mesothelioma treatment, another frightening aspect of dealing with this type of cancer. The three main methods of treating the cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
For those who do not feel any of the aforementioned treatments are working, another treatment option is clinical trials of new treatments. These trials that work in different ways may offer your loved one an opportunity of beating mesothelioma.
With a mesothelioma prognosis being so poor it is important for you to be there for your loved one, both physically and emotionally. It is also important to seek the help of a lawyer experienced with mesothelioma.
