Javits Center Construction Site Accident Closes West Side Highway in NY
In early September, the Javits Center in Hell’s Kitchen was the scene of a construction accident involving a beam that closed part of the West Side Highway for hours. The incident, which occurred around 10 a.m. on the morning of September 11, 2018, forced the closure of the highway for more than six blocks until 10 p.m. that same night.
Crane Accident Leads to Road Closure in New York City
The road closure was caused by two beams falling from a crane onto a sidewalk shed. The FDNY was on scene for some 12 hours investigating and securing the area. The beams overlooked the northbound traffic south of the Lincoln Tunnel near 34th Street on 12th Avenue in Manhattan. According to officials from the FDNY, authorities received a call about the beams at around 10 that morning. Investigators from the New York City Buildings Department said that it looked like a load drop from a crane occurred at the address for the Javits Center. Investigators said that a crane was lifting one steel beam when it hit an upright one, causing both to topple.
According to NBC New York, a crane had to be used to remove the second beam and stabilize the sidewalk shed. There were no injuries reported from this incident, which is still under investigation. In a statement, Robin Stout, the President of the Convention Center Development Corporation, said the following:
“State and city officials are working with contractors to ensure the stabilization of a steel column, which leaned out of alignment and into a sidewalk shed along 12th Avenue at West 39th Street in Manhattan. Every safety protocol was followed and thankfully no injuries were reported. Contractors are working diligently to dismantle the affected steel and secure the construction site and once that is completed, NYPD will notify when traffic is open to the public.”
