Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The following motorcycle accident statistics underscore accident trends in Montana and throughout the nation since 1998*:

In 1998, there was a 6 percent fatality rate among registered motorcycle owners in the U.S. – 2,294 motorcycle accident deaths and 3,879,450 registered motorcycles.

Montana had 251 highway traffic fatalities in 2005.  Of these deaths, 45 percent (112 deaths) involved driver impairment and 28 of which were motorcyclists.  Of these motorcycle accident victims, 46 percent were helmeted at the time of the crash, eight had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .01 or higher, and 20 had no BAC.

In 2007, there were 33 motorcycle accident fatalities in Montana.  Of these victims, 47 percent were wearing helmets, 27 percent were driving with a BAC of .08 or higher, and 30 percent were driving with a BAC of 0.01 or higher.
