Motorcycle Accident Statistics
The following motorcycle accident statistics reflect accident and injury rates in Colorado and throughout the nation since 1998*:
In 1998, there were 22 motorcyclist fatalities per 100,000 million vehicle miles traveled (versus three deaths per 100,000 million vehicle miles traveled for passenger vehicle occupants).
In 1999, there were 60 motorcyclist fatalities in Colorado – 10 percent of the state’s 626 total traffic fatalities.
Between 2004 and 2006, the number of motorcycle fatalities decreased slightly (from 81 in 2004 to 74 in 2006), as did the number of motor vehicle fatalities (from 667 in 2004 to 535 in 2006).
Of the 606 motor vehicle fatalities in Colorado in 2005, 35 percent (213 deaths) involved drivers operating with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher. Of these fatalities, 87 were motorcyclists – 5 percent of whom were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, 29 of whom had a BAC of .01 or higher, and 58 of whom had no BAC.
In 2007, 84 motorcyclists were killed in Colorado. Of these victims, 38 percent were helmeted; 30 percent were operating with a BAC of .08 or higher; and 37 percent were operating with a BAC of 0.01 or higher.
Colorado is one of 16 states that don’t have a motorcycle advisory committee; 16 that mandate rider education for motorcyclists under a certain age; 27 with anti-impaired riding education options for motorcyclists; 21 that include motorcycle safety in highway engineering strategies; and 18 that had the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration assess the state’s motorcycle safety program.
