Preventable medical errors are the 6th largest killer in the United States. The fact that very few are aware of this could be part of the reason why it is so pervasive. Studies indicate that the average American believes the actual death toll from medical errors in the US is roughly 5,000 or less. The numbers are actually more grim, with nearly 100, 000 fatalities occurring on an annual basis due to preventable errors.
