What is Road Rash — Motorcycle Accidents

Posted under: motorcycle accident, motorcycle accident attorney, road rash

Motorcycle Road RageRoad Rash sounds innocuous enough and in some cases it is. A simple spill off a bike or a tumble off a skateboard can produce an insignificant bruising that many people call road rash–this type is easily fixed up with neosporin, a band aid and/or gauze.

On the other hand, serious motorcycle accidents can produce debilitating road rash cases that cause permanent damage to the dermis and surrounding tissues. In such an instance, treatment can be time consumptive and expensive. If road rash accompanies other injuries like broken bones, burns or other common after effects of motorcycle accidents, a victim can find themselves looking at years of rehabilitation and mounting hospital bills. In a situation where the motorcycle accident was not the victim’s fault the tragedy is compounded. In such a scenario personal injury attorneys may be needed.

Road rash can be serious and costly to treat when it is grievous enough.

Road rash — What Is It?

Road rash is a skin abrasion that occurs when a body hits the pavement at an accelerated speed. Because the body strikes the ground with tremendous force, and in some cases, continues to move, the ground, which is an unmovable object, tends to scrape the upper dermal tissues off. Depending on the speed the body was traveling at the time of impact, the affect on the skin can range from minor to seriously crippling in its severity, as in a case where the abrasion reveals bone or lower deep dermal tissues and muscle.

Motorcycle riders tend to suffer from road rash most often after motorcycle accidents because they are not shielding by a automobile’s interior. When they are thrown from their motorcycle their skin is far more likely to make contact with gravel.

The places most often injured include:

1. Legs, Knees
2. Thighs (outward)
3. Arms
4. Face
5. Hands, palms
6. and shoulders

This is largely due to the fact that these are the areas often exposed on the rider’s body.

So, what can a motorcyclist do after a serious motorcycle accident that produces severe and crippling road rash?
