Tips for New Motorcycle Riders: How to Avoid an Accident

So you've decided to join the world of motorcycle riders and get a taste of biker culture. Who could blame you? Motorcycles are essentially freedom on two wheels. But with this newfound freedom comes responsibility. By following these tips for new motorcycle riders, you can improve your chances of avoiding a motorcycle accident and, therefore, having to file a personal injury lawsuit with a motorcycle accident attorney.

If you are a new rider, you should:

  • Sign up for a new motorcyclist training course. A motorcycle license doesn't necessarily make you immune to beginner mistakes. A training course with a certified instructor can help you to hone your skills and make you more road-savvy.
  • Remember that your motorcycle goes where your eyes go. This is a good rule of thumb. More so than a car, a motorcycle responds to the slightest movement of your body. While other motorists may get away with sightseeing while driving from time to time, motorcyclists are best advised to keep their eyes on the road.
  • Relax if you crash. The mistake many motorcyclists, new and experience, make when they crash is tensing their bodies. This increases the chances of serious injury upon colliding with the road.
  • Pretend that you are invisible to other motorists. Yes, other motorists on the road have an obligation to be attentive to all other vehicles, including motorcycles. Of course, knowing this won't make your injuries hurt any less if you're in a full body cast. The sad fact is that many drivers of cars and trucks simply don't make the effort to watch out for motorcycles as they should. By assuming that they don't see you - and operating your motorcycle accordingly - you take proactive steps in ensuring your own safety.
  • Motorcycle helmets really do save lives. So your state doesn't require that you wear a motorcycle helmet - or perhaps it does, and you're simply enamored of the myth of the "motorcycle rebel." Ask a group of experienced bikers whether motorcycle helmets save lives, however, and chances are you'll find at least one who can confirm that they do based on firsthand experience.

Remember, you don't want to have to visit a motorcycle accident lawyer with a serious injury case or, worst yet, have your family have to file a wrongful death lawsuit. By playing it safe, you increase the chances that you will be riding for life.
