Top Auto Defects

Top Auto Defects that Cause Accidents Often times, when we hear of a car driving the wrong way on the highway or running off onto a steep embankment, we automatically believe the car accident was caused by driver error. While in a large percentage of cases such car accidents are caused by the driver, there are proven instances in which the accident catalyst was defective products like faulty brakes or auto defects.

Below is a list of some of the more common auto defects that can cause serious auto accidents:

  • 1. Bad Auto Design early SUV's and even some current models, are built extremely top heavy which, if not supported by a wide base, is not very aerodynamic. Adding to this problem is the fact that the roofs of such vehicles were not structurally sound. The combination ended up being very deadly, culminating in a large number of traffic fatalities. The deaths were largely created by rollover wrecks and roof crush. Sadly there are few regulations that govern automobile crashworthiness in regards to roofs--however, people injured in rollover and roof crush auto accidents often win their cases in court.
  • 2. Faulty Brakes countless crashes have been caused by defective products like bad brakes. As one can imagine, a speeding vehicle can turn into a dangerous unstoppable juggernaut if the brakes suddenly fail to work. Some car manufacturers, like Chrysler, have been proactive in fixing these types of problems. For instance, Chrysler issued a recall in January of 2010 due to auto defects that could cause sudden failure of their brakes. Thankfully they discovered the issue before anyone was hurt.
  • 3. Faulty Electrical Many modern vehicles have electrical mechanisms in them, making it imperative that they work properly as the average consumer would not be able to manually fix an electrical problem. Sadly, some auto accidents occur when an important part of the car malfunctions due to the electrical components seizing up--this can be especially dangerous on the highways or in high volume traffic situations.

Even usually innocuous items like floor mats can create a danger for motorists. Toyota had to recall roughly 3.8 million vehicles when it was discovered that the floor mats caused the accelerator to stick to the floor making it impossible for motorists to stop. Unfortunately, a family of 4 ended up dead before the issue was discovered.
